Ralph Jandrell studied Fine Art at Leeds. He worked for potter Pru Green (Gwili Pottery, Carmarthen) for 5 years before setting up his own workshop at Coalport China Museum, near Ironbridge, Shropshire in 1997. He has been working with clay, and making his full time living from potting for 20 years.
His work is sold through the Museum shop at Coalport and he also sells at specialist ceramic fairs throughout the country (Art in Clay, Potfest, Ceramics South East etc).
The inspiration for his work comes mainly from what he sees around him in the Ironbridge Gorge, where he "lives, works and plays (kayaking on the Severn!). There are trees everywhere- stacked up the sides of the gorge and along it as far as you can see." He likes to think of his work as in a certain English tradition - echoes of English landscape painting, Arts and Crafts pattern and honesty, while trying to create a contemporary, relevant, desirable product for today.
The technique he uses is known as slip decorated Earthenware (a traditional English technique) meaning a liquid clay (slip) is used to decorate the unfired pot. He uses a combination of sponging, brushing and scratching to produce his designs. This is then fired and clear glazed. Wax can also be used to resist the glaze from certain areas, as on his terracotta rim dishes.
